Good Printer : Epson Stylus NX530 C11CB90201 Wireless Color Inkjet Printer with Scanner and Copier

I've been using a Canon Pixma MP830 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (0583B002) for over five years and put quite a few miles on it. It was connected to my home server running Windows XP Pro. I recently got my wife a MacBook running OS X 10.7 Lion. Although Lion could recognize the shared drives on the server, it just couldn't figure out the printer. Evidently Apple decided to screw up CUPS ability to work with SMB printers in Lion. I tried several things to no avail including setting up the Microsoft Print Services for Unix so I could connect over LPD. Evidently the Canon drivers didn't like LPD any better than Lion liked SMB. After spending several hours fighting this, I realized I may just need to get a new printer.

I started at the Apple Store to see what printers they sold. At the low end was the Epson Stylus NX430 Color Inkjet Wireless Small-in-One (C11CB22201). I did some digging around to see if the per-page costs would be horrible. The NX430 wasn't bad but the NX530 was even better. Amazon was selling both for the same price, and the NX530 adds duplex printing and wired ethernet.

It arrived the next day thanks to the Amazon Prime shipping upgrade. I had it set up and working with my PC in minutes. I then had to have my wife's MacBook download the drivers directly from Epson. The driver on the CD included in the package won't work with Lion. There was a sheet of paper giving instructions on how to navigate this. Unfortunately, Epson's website was slow and it took 30 minutes to downlaod the drivers.

Once the drivers were downloaded I had the printer setup on the MacBook in minutes. The scanner also works over wifi with the MacBook. That's a nice upgrade over the Canon which required me to scan only from the server.

The printer is quiet and very fast. I haven't tested it's photo capabilities but I suspect it's better than the Canon.

One drawback is that the printed paper comes out the front and falls on the floor. There is a flimsy, flip-out plastic piece that is supposed to catch the prints but it doesn't always do a great job.

Not that great : Brother Printer MFCJ825DW Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax

I figure it is my time to give back and make some reviews. I purchased this printer today from Staples. The unit looks sleek, appears to be simple to use, and of course has all the bells and whistles. I did call customer service for clarity on the owner's manual direction which is very difficult to understand. After numerous department prompts, I was advised I would be answered in the next order received; my time estimate was 14 min. After 25 minutes of being on hold, I gave up. I would suggest ditching the owner's manual and go right to the CD. The CD worked perfectly and led me thru the process step by step. The only difficult part was locating the USB connection on the printer for wireless capability (you have to lift up both the copy and main lid) I called Staples and there service tech had a bear of a time locating the above connection. It printed the first time, no paper jams or issues.

Great prints and very easy set up! : Canon PIXMA MG6220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Scanner (5292B002)

Like many others here, I am very happy with my purchase so far. I have only had it a short while so I will update later this year to let you know if I still think it's a good deal.

This thing just went on sale and at $150 I can tell you it is a good deal right now. I have been shopping around and for the price you cannot beat it. The exception would be if you need cheaper inks. The research says this printer will cost you more per page. I will let you know later in the year if I feel it.

In the meantime, let me tell you where this did not disappoint. First, I bought this to replace my dead HP AllinOne which I had grown to hate. It was extremely unreliable throughout its life and I swear I spent all my time fighting the software and drivers to get it to print. Also, the HP software seemed to devote itself primarily to asking me if I wanted to buy their ink from their online store or updating itself incessantly. Drove me and my kid NUTS. Further, sharing the wireless connection between PC's was a royal pain and we always had to release it.

None of this is a problem with this Cannon. I run 2 Linux and 2 Windows PC's and they all use this printer with NO problems. I just hit print and things print. Cannon makes drivers for both the scanner and the printer features for Linux that are a breeze to install and just work immediately. They even have different packages for different distro's. I am an Ubuntu guy, but saw Redhat stuff too.

If you are worried about printing speed after reading the professional reviews, stop worrying. I have been very impressed. This thing is faster than my "higher rated" HP. By rating, I mean PPM as described by HP, not by reviewers. At any rate, the 12IPM that Cannon claims translates to really fast printing on your average black and white doc.

I have not yet taken advantage of the gorgeous photo's this thing turns out, but I am excited to do so based on reviews. Go search on 6120, 6220, 8120, 8220 on the web. They are all basically the same quality for scanning and printing. By the way, the 8120 and 8220 are basically just photographer oriented versions that have the ability to print from film I think. Check it out. Personally that feature wasn't worth 50 bucks for me. The smaller LCD (3 inches) makes NO difference.
